A Few Things on Sale and a Freebie

Sale Item #1:  On sale for $3.00 (normally $5.00)
Do you hate dread teaching the dreaded 3 handwriting lines as much as I do?  Over the years I've developed the Handwriting Zoo to help explain to kinders and first graders the proper placement of the letters on the lines.  This method has really helped make the "handwriting house" easier to understand for my class.
Click the picture to go to the product on TPT & click here for more info:

Sale Item #2:  On sale for $6.00 (normally $8.00)
Includes 5 different activities for over 70 sight words:  tracing, unscramble the word, find the hidden words, stamp the words, unscramble the sentence.
Click the picture to go to the product on TPT & click here for more info:

Sale Item #3:  On sale for $6.00 (normally $8.00)
This is my newest product.  I used dominoes to help teach number sense, addition, and mental math.  Using dominoes gives kids a "mental picture" of numbers.  This packet focuses on numbers 0-6 as is a very developmentally progressive system for kinders and beginning of year first graders.
Click the picture to go to the product on TPT & click here for more info:

Freebie: 0-6 Dottie Domino Memory game, visual directions sheet & "I Can" card.  Great for beginning of the year number sense.  This is a game you can use the very first week of school!

Anyone on a scary exciting countdown to the first day of school?  I haven't started yet. . .I'm still in denial vacation mode.

My Favorite Purchase

Isn't this digital frame awesome!?!   The white part is a magnetic dry erase board and there's a record option.  Kids press the green button to hear the message!  How fun is that!!!  : )

Confession:  I actually bought it LAST summer!
It was on my "to do list" to get pictures ready to put on it and use it in centers.  It stayed on my list.  It's still on my list.  I'm working on it. . . slowly.  I have M, R, S & T done. (I chose those 4 letters because it's the first 4 my kindergarten team teaches.)

Here's what's done so far:
*MRST PowerPoint for my Smartboard
In the PowerPoint there is a "shout it out" section where the letters flip and the kids shout out the letters.  Then the letters slow down and the kinders graph the letters that come on the screen.

*The recording sheets (2 choices):

*I also have the jpg images from the PowerPoint saved to be loaded onto the digital frame.

Here's a screen shot of the Power Point (the same images are saved in jpg format for the photo frame.)

4 letters down. . . 22 to go!

If you're interested in these files I am giving it away for free from my TPT store.  Click here to grab it and try it out with me!

P.S. if you're interested in the frame just click the picture to view it on Amazon.

First Day Pete the Cat Tour

We don't start school until August 20th but this morning I woke up in a panic.  I haven't been in to school AT ALL this summer.

I checked last week. . . my room hasn't been cleaned yet.  Giant relief!  I can't do anything until it's clean. . . yay!  That was last week. . . this week, I'm panicking.

I do, thanks to my excellent team, have the first 2 weeks of lessons planned out.  I thing down. . . 200 to go.  AUGH!!!!!!

Ok, deep breath.

I am super excited to read Pete the Cat's new book Rocking in My School Shoes the first day of school.  For the past 10 years I've read the Kissing Hand and then we do a tour of the school looking for Chester.  This year we are doing a tour of the school while looking for Pete!

If you haven't seen the new book here's a sneak peek <3

The tour is always crazy insane. . . trying to keep track of 24 kids who don't know hallway rules or understand my expectation yet and whose names and faces I don't have memorized yet. . . oh boy.   BUT it's fun and the kids enjoy the hunt.  I'm always super surprised how many of them TRULY believe we'll find Chester.  : )

Here's a Pete the Cat freebie for you. (Includes tour of school cards, first day certificate and coloring page)  I found out my kiddos get art this year so I updated the tour.  If you've downloaded this from my TPT site you might want to download it again (I can't post it on TPT anymore. . . long story. . .copyright laws blah, blah, blah.)

Click Pete to get your copy:

Ok, off to get something school related done. . . maybe I'll start my "to do" list.  That always makes me feel better plus I LOVE checking things off the list!

Head over to Rubberboots and Elf  Shoes linky for more great Pete the Cat ideas!

A Teacher's Wisdom (Linky)

Fabulously First

Deb from Fabulously First is having a spectacular linky party called "A Teacher's Wisdom."  The linky is dedicated to advice for new teachers but even after 14 years of teaching I loved reading through everyone's advice!  Click the pic above to check out the linky!

The first year I taught there was a very kind veteran teacher who took me under her wings and gave me this advice:
Obviously she knew I was nervous, stressed, worried, etc. and she told me to smile in front of the kids and save the "stress face" for her!    I liked that advice and it has served me well.
Make sure you find someone you can share your "stress face" with!

Here are a few more (lessons from my own mistakes):
*Ask for help:
Not everyone will know the answer but someone will...and it's OK that it's not you

*Make mistakes:
Mistakes make you "one of the gang!"  Only the robot who teaches in TimBukToo doesn't make mistakes and no one wants to teach with him!

*Every child CAN learn:
Just maybe not today so check back with him tomorrow.

*Keep calm and teach on:
Truthfully, I am still working on this one. . . hopefully I'll have it mastered before I retire.

*Teach your students EVERYTHING you expect them to know.
If you go into your classroom for the first time and "assume" your students will know how to behave in your room. . . well you know what happens to people who assume.

*And finally. . . enjoy it!
I still think back to that first year and wonder at how great those kids were.  It is probably  more likely that I just didn't know 1/2 the stuff that was "wrong" that first year. . .ignorance is bliss?  Either way, it will forever, in my mind, be one of my top 10 favorite years!

Behavior Charts: Advice/Comments Welcome!

I question my methods often, as I think all good educators should.  So, if you have a minute please read this LONG post and leave some honest feedback and advice on what works for YOU.

Last year was a tough one (behaviorally) in my classroom.  I felt I had more defiance, anger and "issues" come up than I ever have before.  Actually it seems every year gets a little tougher.  I've taught for 14 years and in the last 2 years I've had to chase down runaway kids, been spit at, screamed at, scratched and had to have many, many, many talks about why it is not ok to hurt others.

So, I'm spending my summer trying to prepare myself for next year.  If the pattern holds I need to be ready.  I want my kinders to have a great year. . .it's their first and I need to be at my best for them and their parents who might be sending their first (or last) child through kindergarten.  They deserve a stress free environment, right?   I'll share with you what I've done for years and then ask my question.

I've always had a "Behavior Management" system.  Whether it's been "move your card" or "move your picture" or "move your clip."  The overall idea was always the same:
1.  You make a bad choice
2.  You lose 5-10 minutes of _____ (free time, recess, computer time, etc)
3.  Think about the "choice" that put you in this "time out"
4. When "time out" is over we'll discuss what choices where made and what you could do differently next time

And I can honestly say that, out of a class of 24 last year, there were 12 kids who had to repeat this process over and over and over and over.  Sigh.

Here's my chart from last year.

Also, I think it's important to understand that the consequences part of my classroom management is not all I do.

We have a "Pond of Choice" for conflict resolution. (Love this by the way!  If you want to know more click the picture to go to the website.)

We talk about above the line/below the line behavior (Top 20 Training:  Great training and I love this too and use it alot!)

I've read Ruby Payne's book A Framework for Understanding Poverty.  I understand the need to teach "those are your home rules"  and "these are your school rules"
Great book by the way!

We read stories about appropriate behavior.  We talk about what appropriate vs. inappropriate behavior looks like, how it affects everyone, what we can do to build a better community, and on and on and on.  Love Julia Cook. . .  she is FaNtAsTiC!

We talk about Warm Fuzzies/Cold Prickles and try to fill our Warm Fuzzy jar for a class reward.

We read Have You Filled a Bucket Today?

We role play, practice "redos", I sing my songs, chant my chants, do my little dance, weave my magic over their beautiful 5 and 6 year old minds and still:

**Bobby finds it ok to scratch Sally and draw blood because she touched his pencil**

**Billy thinks it's ok to yell at me because his shoe is untied**

**Susie runs out of the building and tries to hide because she doesn't want to go to music**

**Jenny screeches (yes, screeches!) at the class that life is not fair and she hates us all.**

Well, you get the point.  Even after hours, days, weeks, months spent working on positive productive behavior kids still make bad choices, mistakes, errors, learning opportunities. . . whatever you want to call them.

And isn't it our job, as their teacher, to help them learn from their choices?

So, finally, here's where my question comes in:
The BEHAVIOR CHART
Some say they are not necessary and only "embarass" the kids.
Some say "keep it" and lots are even using this more positive version I've seen all over pinterest and blogs:

What do you think?  I can see both points of view. I really can.  I don't want to embarrass the kids but I do want them to stop and think about their behavior because how else are they going to learn from it?
I believe (even if it is controversial) that kids need consequences for hurtful/inappropriate behavior (that might be a post for another day!)

Do you "keep track" of inappropriate behavior?
If so, how?
If not, what do you do?

Blog Hop and Swap! Welcome Little Miss Kindergarten!

Yay!  The day is finally here!!!!!!!!  I am over at Kinder Alphabet today guest posting.  Check it out! (Links to all Blog Hoppers are at the bottom of this post.)  BUT before you go please welcome one of my favorite bloggers:

Hello Kinder Friends,
I am so excited to be guest posting for Inspired by Kindergarten today! I can't wait to share a few of my favorite Kinder things with you! I know we are all busy thinking and preparing for a new year, so I hope to be able to give you a few things that you can use or that will get you inspired for a great start. I think Back to School time is my favorite time within the school year. I love it when everything is fresh and new. I love all the Back to School sales and just the planning and preparing to do it all over again. I always want just one more year...
First, getting ready for a new year, you might be thinking about your best teacher friends. If you click on the picture above, it will take you to a free download for a quick teacher gift. All you have to do is print, insert in a frame, add a bow and there you go...you are all ready for some simple and fun gift giving! You can find frames and teacher bags at Dollar Tree. They always seem to have those teacher theme bags and when I see them, I buy them all up!
After you have all of your gifts in bags and ready to go, you will probably start thinking about your classroom. Just like me you are probably wondering what your colors will be and what everything will look like. You know my motto is...sometimes you just have to get crafty! I can show you some quick and easy ways to get your creative mind working in the right direction. How about new curtains for your classroom? What if I told you these could be inexpensive and easy? What if I told you that you could easily change out the fabric and create look of your own? Are you in? I thought you might be so here we go.
Pick out your bandanas.
My bandanas are from Hobby Lobby and I purchased them for a dollar each.
Supplies:
Bandanas 3-4
Curtain rod
Stitch Witch no sew hem tape
Scissors
Iron
Ok, let's get going...
Lay the bandana flat and place the rod on top of the bandana and fold to make a pocket for the rod. Press the fabric down to make a crease.
Measure your hem, tape and cut.
Iron down the fabric over the rod and onto the hem tape. Make sure this pocket is snug. If you make it snug, it will look more like it is a sewn pocket. Now that you have one bandana made you will have to use this as your template to measure out the other bandanas. The reason for this is because bandanas are not made all the same size so you will have to make adjustments. Making these adjustments will allow you to have a straight hem. Trust me on this. Once you have repeated the above steps, you will have the perfect no sew DIY classroom curtains around and just for around ten dollars!
Now that you have the DIY No Sew Classroom Curtains down you probably want the Shut The Front Door Wreath? Yep, I did too!
I purchased all my supplies from WalMart.
Supplies:
Styrofoam wreath
10 packs of assorted size and color balloons
Floral pins at least 200
Ribbon optional
The directions are simple. Lay the wreath flat and pin on balloons in the middle with the floral pins. If you want to add ribbon just cut your ribbon in strips about four inches long. Make a loop and pin on the wreath. You just twist the wreaht and pin away. You pin and pin and pin. And for less than twenty dollars you have a Shut The Front Door Wreath!
Alright friends, if you do not know me you have to know I love dice more than anything. And if you are going to Hobby Lobby for bandanas, you might as well go and get this craft organizer for your dice. Do not forget your coupon because it makes this little nifty box $1.80. So if you get your dice box and have nothing to go in it, you can start your collection at Dollar Tree where they have dice that are colored and black and white in packs for a dollar. Grab a bunch while you are there because you will want them. My favorite beginning of the school year dice activity is my I Love Dice Recording Page.
Click on the image above for your own copy.
I use this at the beginning of the year when teaching the children how to use dice.
Since we are thinking about all things Back to School, you know I have to mention Science. I LOVE Science so much that I had to create a blog just for all things Science. I hope this year you will join me for some Science Fun! And when I start thinking of Back to School I always think of safety because that is what we start talking about first. If you are talking safety, you have to grab my free Safety Contract.
Just click on the image below and grab yours!
For more Science Fun join me on my blog!

Currently, I am a part of the Daily 5 book study for Kindergarten. I have had a lot of fun participating and hosting this.
