Gasp, Sigh, Groan. . . I know, I know!
Don't hate me!
I've become one of "those" teachers who has their center routine down pat and can't seem to change!
So, since I'm confessing.
Here's what some of my centers looked like this week:

Glad I'm not the only "bad" teacher not doing Daily 5! I love the way my literacy centers go and my kids get so much from it. I say keep doing what you think is best :)

Well, I see at least a Daily 4: Word Work, Work on Writing, Reading and Listening. Right now I'm only doing a Daily 3 (and that's on a good day!) I think you are right to do what you know works for you and your kiddos. Plus, as a first grade teacher I am SO glad to see that you are doing fine motor activities. SO many of our kids come to us without knowing how to print letters, numbers and/or hold a pencil correctly. I think it is important that those foundational skills come back into practice. Keep up the good work!!
ReplyDeleteOh heavens - rest assured you are not alone! I too do not do Daily Five. I have the same feelings you do - I have my way of doing workstations down pat and it works great - why fix what is NOT broken!

I think for most of us The Daily 5 is just a very nice re-work of what goes on in most classrooms anyway. Some teachers need a very detailed guide to work from others have it figured out. Do what is comfortable for you and what works for you classroom. I have incorporated a few things from many sources over the years.
ReplyDeleteI can't help but echo what has been said above...i also don't do the daily five but instead...the "daily many" as children in my class have numerous meaningful opportunities to engage in literacy activities each day, each week...through more structured literacy centres as well as less structured play and exploration times... in fact, at "their choice/center time", the writing centre is often so popular, i have to offer a portable writing centre that can be set up at another location...there are many ways to provide a language rich classroom with meaningful ways for children to develop their skills.

I can't help but echo what has been said above...I also do not do the daily five but instead the "daily many" as children have numerous opportunities to engage in literacy development throughout each day and each week...both through literacy centres and their own PLAY and exploration times. There are many ways to organize a language rich environment which allows for the meaningful and developmentally appropriate acquisition of skills.
